This Is AOL / Our Story / History

AOL builds premium content and innovative technology, an essential combination we call Culture and Code.

Originally known as America Online, we connected over 35 million people to the internet during its early days, becoming a cultural icon and business behemoth. Today, AOL is focused on delivering mobile-centric, data-enhanced and video-rich experiences across an open ecosystem and a global marketplace.

Our continued growth and evolution is the product of nearly a decade of careful cultivation of our internal strengths, coupled with thoughtful acquisitions and rigorous integration of the very best technologies and talents on the market.

We recognized digital as the future of media and set out to build a network to enable our company—and our users and partners—to capitalize on this new mobile world. By acquiring a number of properties in line with our principle of Culture and Code, AOL developed the infrastructure to make this new future a reality.
