
Chief Technology Officer
As Chief Technology Officer of AOL, Ted Cahall is responsible for driving the vision, strategy and delivery of the technology behind AOL’s vast array of Web and desktop offerings. He leads all engineering and technology related efforts to drive innovation and performance of AOL’s highly scalable Web products and properties including MapQuest, AOL Search, AIM, AOL Mail, Advertising, and AOL / MediaGlow’s global publishing systems including DynaPub and Blogsmith. Cahall is also responsible for AOL’s global datacenter operations, ATDN backbone network, ISP infrastructure, network and systems management, information security, storage services, registration and billing systems, NOC, data warehouse, data center automation and systems operations of AOL’s products including its highly scalable Mail, AIM, MapQuest, Search, publishing and advertising infrastructures. He is also responsible for AOL’s internal corporate systems including HR, Finance, Accounting, Legal, corporate e-mail, voice and desktop services. Cahall also has responsibility for AOL’s development centers in Bangalore, India and Dublin, Ireland.
Previously, Cahall was the President of AOL Products and Technologies business adding Mail, Toolbars, Truveo, Mobile, and the AOL Client to his previous responsibilities. He joined AOL in January 2007 as Executive Vice President of the Platforms business unit responsible for Search, MapQuest, Commerce, Publishing, Local and Relegence, assuming responsibility for the Technologies division later that year.
Cahall is a seasoned global Internet business and technology veteran. Prior to joining AOL, he was Executive Vice President and COO of United Online's Internet properties, including Classmates.com, a leading community-based networking company with Web properties in the U.S., Sweden, Germany and France. Cahall also managed the company's various Web-hosting brands, including Freeservers.com and photo sharing service PhotoSite.
He was Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President at CNET Networks for six years. He managed the company's Web site development, ad platform, data warehouse, technology infrastructure, data centers, and back-office systems in both the U.S. and Europe. Cahall played a critical role in the development and growth of CNET Networks' leading brands, such as CNET, GameSpot, News.com, CNET Shopper, Download.com, Webshots, and ZDNet.
Cahall spent six years as a Vice President at Bank of America. He managed systems development for its Internet home banking division and prior to that led its Enterprise Architecture & Standards division. He also held management positions at two network and systems management focused technology start-ups. He spent the first six years of his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he developed several network communication systems and received a U.S. patent for systems performance analysis.
He is currently active in the D.C. and Northern Virginia areas through board memberships on the Northern Virginia Technology Council and the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and on the board of directors of the Year-Up and Network for Good non-profit organizations.
Cahall holds a BS and MS in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed non-degree, executive MBA studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
