Fans Select the AOL Running Man as a Favorite Advertising Icon

New York, NY – September 21, 2009 – Online voters selected the AOL Running Man as one of two favorite icons to be inducted in to the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame, beating out 25 other popular mascots, Advertising Week announced today. The Running Man joins previous winners, including Mr. Peanut, the Pillsbury Dough Boy, the Kool-Aid Man, and Colonel Sanders, on the Advertising Walk of Fame, located in New York City on Madison Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets. Additionally, the AOL Running Man will be recognized in the Advertising Icon Museum. This year also marks the 13th birthday of the AOL Running Man.

“We are extremely proud of this honor, and we’re delighted that people continue to embrace the Running Man as an icon of the Internet,” said AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong. "As we look towards AOL’s 25th anniversary, it’s a huge asset for AOL to have the Running Man leading our way. At AOL, brands matter, and we’re working every day to support the AOL family of brands by delivering experiences that delight our consumers and our advertising partners."

The AOL Running Man was introduced in 1996, when the icon was featured in the Sign On process for the AOL Service. He became the icon for AIM in 1997 and was used heavily in AOL for Broadband advertising beginning in 2003.

The Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame was created by Advertising Week, which starts today and runs through September 25.
