Government-backed council marks UK-first following Byron digital world report
London 29th September 2008: AOL today announces that Camille de Stempel, its Director of Consumer Advocacy and Privacy for AOL Europe, has been appointed to the UK Council for Child Internet Safety, chaired by government ministers.
De Stempel has been Director of Policy for AOL since 2004 covering high priority matters such as law enforcement and security, child protection and consumer confidence issues as well as advertising and privacy policy.
She is responsible for AOL’s policies in areas such as safety and security, editorial and advertising content. In her role, Camille works closely with government, law enforcement, charities, academics and other policy stakeholders.
“I am pleased to be joining the council and look forward to contributing to the debate. This is a unique opportunity to help influence and shape government policy and make the Internet safer for children,” said de Stempel.
Welcoming de Stempel’s appointment, Dana Dunne, CEO of AOL Europe, said: “I am delighted with the nomination of Camille de Stempel to the Government’s first Child Internet Safety Council. Keeping children safe online has long been a top priority for AOL, and we are pleased to continue to contribute to initiatives that promote this goal, as well as offer online tools and resources for parents and families.”
The establishment of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety was one of the recommendations set out by Dr Tanya Byron in her report “Safer Children in a Digital World” that was accepted by the UK government in March, 2008. The council will be responsible for developing and leading a child Internet safety strategy and advising the UK government on e-safety.
The council’s board meetings will be chaired by the Home Office minister and the Department for Children, Schools and Families minister and overseen by an executive board. The board’s members are drawn from key stakeholders involved in the Internet, video gaming and mobile industries as well as the Internet Watch Foundation and charity organisations.
