New York, NY- July 17, 2008 – AOL today announced an update to Winamp (http://www.winamp.com), one of the world’s most popular media players. The new update, which is in general release starting today, offers users a collection of new product features and enhancements including a comprehensive new multimedia artist discovery experience, integration of the new AOL Radio powered by CBS Radio, a customizable toolbar that lets users control Winamp from their browser, a commerce platform to purchase digital downloads, physical CDs, and ringtones, and language support for Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese.
“The new Winamp update underscores our ongoing commitment to continually improve the overall user experience, providing consumers with new avenues for music discovery,” said Kevin Conroy, executive vice president of AOL. “We’re pleased to provide the Winamp audience with an unparalleled multimedia artist experience.”
Leveraging AOL Music (http://music.aol.com), the web’s most visited music destination*, the Truveo (http://www.truveo.com) video search engine and SHOUTcast Radio, Winamp’s newly launched artist discovery experience provides users with a robust multimedia experience giving music fans unparalleled access to artist songs, bios/news, related videos, radio stations, and photos. Users can get extended information about artists they already know, or discover new artists by exploring recommended artists that are either similar to or have influenced their favorite artists.
For the first time, Winamp 5.54 has been updated to allow music fans to purchase digital downloads, physical CDs, and ringtones. The commerce platform which will be extended to include tickets in the near future, allows multiple commerce providers to be integrated into Winamp.
Winamp 5.54 has also been updated to include the new AOL Radio powered by CBS Radio (http://radio.aol.com) that features a redesigned online player and a wealth of new radio stations, including 150 local CBS RADIO stations, plus more than 200 AOL Radio stations.
