Intern FAQs
Posted: January 3, 2008
Which majors/degrees do you recruit for internships?
Each summer we offer a variety of opportunities for students of all backgrounds. However, undergraduate technical majors such as computer science and computer engineering are the most common. Other requested majors include business, finance, marketing, HR and communications. For graduate students, we are interested in technical master's degrees, law degrees and students pursuing an MBA. Eighty percent of our internships are undergraduate, 20 percent are graduate.
Are AOL internships paid?
Yes, most internships are paid. Undergraduate students are considered full-time hourly employees, and their pay is based on their year in school, their major and skills. Most graduate students are salaried employees with a pay scale commensurate with their experience and education. Some interns, participating in specialized internships, receive course credit instead of financial compensation.
How long do internships last?
Most of our internships begin in mid-May and end around mid-August (10-12 weeks) to coincide with university calendars. However, some opportunities offer you the flexibility to work around your school schedule, if necessary.
Do you offer internships at other times of the year, other than in summer?
Our offices sometimes extend their summer interns on a part-time basis during the school year, or may invite exceptional summer interns back for winter break. See also "AOL Co-Op Programs."
When will I know if I'm being considered for an intern position?
When you submit your resume online for a specific open position, you can expect to hear from us within three weeks. If we are interested in discussing the opportunity with you, a recruiter or hiring manager will contact you by the end of April. Due to the high volume of resumes we receive, we regret that we are unable to respond to everyone who submits a resume.
Which AOL locations offer internships?
You'll find the bulk of our summer internship positions open in Virginia and New York with a handful of opportunities in other locations like Seattle, San Fransisco, Los Angeles and Baltimore. Check position listings often between January and May as new positions are updated daily.
