MapQuest Integrates Traffic and Road Condition Cameras Into Maps & Directions

Get accurate traffic before you hit the road

DENVER, CO (February 2, 2012)– MapQuest, a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), today integrated traffic and road condition cameras into their maps and directions. Now available in over 100 markets and featuring more than 11,000 cameras from partner INRIX, MapQuest seeks to make traveling easier and safer. The majority of the images from the camera are updated within a couple of minutes.

"MapQuest has long been known for accurate maps and directions and is one of the top travel tool sites* on the web today. And we are continuing to provide new ways to help people discover where they want to go with our recent launch of MapQuest Vibe for what's best in any neighborhood and then make sure our users get there with accurate directions and traffic information," said Vijay Bangaru, MapQuest VP Product. "The addition of traffic cameras is just another step in making travel safer, easier and more fun."

A picture is worth a thousand words, and traffic cameras tell an important story on whether your route is bumper-to-bumper, snowed in, or just wide open. To see the traffic cams on MapQuest, just click on the "Live Traffic" button located at the top right portion of the map. Main routes on the map are highlighted in green, yellow or red indicating the traffic flow on those routes as well as more detailed traffic speed and incident information to access. Wherever there is a traffic cam available, a small blue camera icon will pop up to hover over and click on for the camera image and more information.

Large metro areas have a lot of cameras in a concentrated area, so as a user zooms in they will see even more cameras to pick from.

More cameras will be added in the next several months and traffic cams will also be available on MapQuest's mobile web and mobile apps in the near future.

It's now easier than ever to quickly get an idea of traffic and the road conditions for the morning commute or when heading out for a weekend getaway. Learn more about Traffic Cams on MapQuest on our blog and try out MapQuest's Traffic Cameras before you hit the road!
